The London Board provides strategic advice and support to London’s 32 Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCBs). The London Board is not responsible for individual child protection matters – if you are concerned that a child may be at risk of harm, please contact your local children's social care team. London Safeguarding Children Board terms of reference
The London Board's workplan for 2008/9 is developed and implemented jointly by the London Safeguarding Children Board and the Children & Learners Division of the Government Office for London. The workplan is designed to address needs for service support and co-ordination for children professionals and London’s local communities in safeguarding London’s children. The London Board has also produced a progress report on the workplan for 2007/08, and a similar report will be published in the summer of 2009. The London Board is chaired by Derek Myers (Chief Executive, RB Kensington and Chelsea), and its membership is made up of representatives from the London boroughs, the police, health, probation and fire services; and London independent, voluntary and community agencies. The London Safeguarding Children Board's workstreams are managed by the Board Manager, Christine Christie. The Board’s current initiatives include:
- Publishing the London Child Protection Procedures and its supplementaries;
- Hosting the annual Safeguarding London's Children conference (this year - 12th December 2008);
- Hosting a mid-year conference, focussing on a specific area of concern for London agencies (this year focussed on child sexual abuse, and took place on June 18th 2008);
- Leading work on the development of a consistent dataset for London's LSCBs;
- Disseminating the findings of the Community Partnership Project, and continuing to support work on building the capacity of ethnic minority communities and faith groups to effectively safeguard their children;
- Supporting the implementation of child death review processes in London;
- Leading work to introduce routine questionning for FGM in all London's midwifery units;
- Developing a London multi-agency safeguarding children training framework (Competence Matters);
- Co-hosting conferences on safeguarding children in relation to specific issues of concern;
- Supporting London networks for safeguarding children professionals in health, mental health and education;
- Supporting network meetings and good practice sharing for London LSCB Chairs and LSCB Development Officers.
The London Board aims to respond to London agencies’ needs on specific issues, within a broad remit of:
- Providing a strategic safeguarding children policy lead for London;
- Promoting information sharing and collaboration in practice guidance and training for London agencies;
- Supporting research and initiatives to improve services and practice in London;
- Helping London agencies meet the challenges of national safeguarding children policy.
